⁣ Ever experienced this before? Feeling this way can be incredibly frustrating and confusing. You may be familiar with the principle of energy balance: when you eat more calories (energy) than you burn, you gain weight. And when you eat fewer calories than you burn, you lose weight. So if you think you’re not eating “that much” or less than your daily expenditure, what’s going on?⁣🤷‍♂️ ⁣ Well, the problem is that it’s very easy and common to underestimate how much you eat. Research has shown that, on average, people underestimate their food intake by around 47% percent. As humans, we’re not very good at estimating portion sizes. We don’t always realize how calorie-dense certain foods are (especially foods like nuts, seeds, and nut butters) and we deceive ourselves sometimes (“I only had a small handful of chips, not like three quarters of the bag right?”) ⁣ ⁣ What can you do to better estimate how much you’re eating? Try tracking everything you eat for one week. It’s not that hard to do and there’s many ways you can do it. Keep a food log by writing everything down in a notebook and use measuring cups or food scales, use a macro-tracking app like MyFitnessPal, or even just take a picture of everything you eat. But make sure to include EVERYTHING you eat and drink. Don’t forget to include the sugar and cream in your coffee, the dressing on your salad, those couple of cookies you snacked on after dinner. You’re just trying to notice your food choices, not judge them. I know tracking can be very tedious, but you don’t need to do it regularly. Just use it as a short-term experiment to help you build greater food awareness. ⁣ ⁣ By tracking your food intake, you learn more about your current eating habits and gain a better understanding of appropriate portions. This is why many people start eating better when they start paying more attention to what they’re eating. Just the act of tracking alone, without any other dietary changes, helps people lose up to five percent of their body weight. The next time you get confused as to why you’re not losing weight, realize that tracking is a valuable step that can give you insight on how much you’re truly eating☝️
